Hugs Anyone?

13 Year Old Girl Gets Detention For Hugging. This is the headline that caught my eye today. Schools are moving to a no PDA policy which includes hugging. What? Hugging? Now, I've worked in plenty of schools and seen PDA gone too far....but hugging? I think that is taking things a bit too far. I remember back to middle school and I hugged all my friends. Most of you know that I'm a huggy person and we are a huggy family. So I say, give someone a hug today in protest of this silly rule. Here's some of my favorite huggers!

  1. I totally agree with you on the importance of hugging... BUT... I wanted to relate a story from my hometown from no too long ago. We made it to CNN headlines for our 'elementary school banning hugging'.

The "hug" in question was actually a lift you off the ground bear hug given unsolicited by a 65lb kindergartener to a 35 lb kindergartener. It resulted in the smaller child being dropped on the pavement. After a note went home to the hugger's parents (note...no disciplinary action... just a note) the child told her parents "I was just hugging her." The parents called to set up a meeting the next day with the principal, but instead of the parents waiting there the next day, channel 5 was waiting. The parents had called the media to give 'their side' before ever speaking to anyone at the school.

Not gong into a debate here, I truly agree with what you wrote... just giving a different perspective. I look at the media in a whole different light after seeing what happened in my town.

  2. PS... love you hugging photos though!!! What a great collage that would make with some nice hugging quote to go with it!

  3. It saddens me so much, though, when we've managed to twist something as simple as a hug into something forbidden. Especially, as a teacher, when I've seen so many kids desperately seeking attention/affection that they're not getting at home.
A hug seems a much simpler way to show our children are loved, than some of the ones our most needy children opt for instead.

  4. Ridiculous! This world is going down hill so fast...really ironic that they want to ban "hugging" and yet push for sex ed in classrooms as young as kindergarden. The blind leading the blind comes to mind...
